Sorso alternatives, and when they are the better answer
Most comparison pages are written to make the author win every row. This one is not. Sorso does one thing, accounting and fractional CFO for outpatient clinics that bill payers, and there are several situations where somebody else is plainly the better fit. Those are marked below.
| Alternative | What it is built for | Choose it over Sorso when |
|---|---|---|
| Bench | Generic small-business bookkeeping across all industries, no healthcare layer and no CFO scope. Bench shut down in December 2024 and filed for bankruptcy in January 2025, resuming that month as a subsidiary of Employer.com. | You are a sole proprietor or a non-healthcare small business that needs clean books cheaply. |
| Pilot | Startup-oriented bookkeeping plus CFO, QuickBooks Online only, with a Health & Medtech vertical aimed at health innovators. | You are a venture-backed healthtech company rather than a clinic that bills payers. |
| Heard | Software-led bookkeeping, tax and S-corp compliance built specifically for solo therapists. | You are a single-clinician practice. Heard's own pricing page states it does not work with multi-owner firms. |
| The Healthcare CFO | Fractional CFO and advisory for healthcare SMBs across a wide revenue band, including biotech and life sciences. | You run a biotech, a life sciences company, or a healthcare business well above the outpatient-clinic range. |
| Ascent CFO | Generalist fractional CFO across several sectors: healthcare, SaaS, e-commerce, manufacturing. | You own businesses outside healthcare and want one CFO across all of them, or you need month-to-month terms. |
| Maven Financial Partners | CFO advisory for dental, med spa and aesthetic practices that works alongside your existing bookkeeper and CPA. | Your bookkeeping is already handled well and you want strategic advice layered on top rather than a firm owning the close. |
| ProfitUp Advisory | Fractional CFO on a single flat retainer, covering dental, PT and veterinary practices. | You run a veterinary practice, which Sorso does not serve, or you want one flat number rather than separate tiers. |
| CleverProfits | CFO, bookkeeping and tax bundled together for cash-pay and online businesses. | You are a cash-pay owner who wants one generalist package and does not need payer-mix or claims-level work. |
| Bright Balance | Accounting and advisory across multiple industries, with M&A and audit-preparation depth. | You need M&A support or audit preparation across a multi-industry portfolio. |
| MedPro CFO | Fractional CFO specialising in physical therapy practices. | You are a PT-only owner who specifically wants a vendor concentrated on physical therapy. |
| DSO CFO | Dental-only CFO work with DSO-side depth. | You want dental-only specialisation and do not need coverage across other outpatient specialties. |
Pricing is deliberately not listed for the firms above. A competitor’s price is a figure we cannot keep current, and stale numbers mislead more than they help. Each company publishes its own, which is always the accurate version.
When Sorso is the fit
Multi-provider outpatient clinics doing $1M or more, billing commercial and government payers, that have outgrown a bookkeeper who closes the month accurately but cannot tell you which payer is underpaying you or which provider is carrying the practice.
The work that distinguishes it is payer-mix reconciliation, billing-to-books tie-out, provider-level profitability and location-level P&L. Accounting starts at $2,000/mo and fractional CFO at $4,000/mo, both published, sold separately or together.
If none of that describes your practice, one of the firms above will serve you better, and you will save a year finding that out.
Common questions
When is Sorso the wrong choice?
When you are a solo practitioner, when you are not in healthcare, when you run a veterinary practice, or when your business is a healthtech startup rather than a clinic that bills payers. Each of those has a better-fitting option in the table above, and saying so costs us nothing — a client who was never a fit leaves within a year anyway.
What actually separates a healthcare-specialist firm from a generalist?
Payer-mix reconciliation, billing-to-books tie-out, provider-level profitability and location-level P&L. A generalist bookkeeper closes your month accurately without ever telling you which payer is underpaying you or which provider is carrying the practice. Both are doing their job; only one of them answers the questions a clinic owner actually has.
Do you publish your pricing?
Yes. Accounting starts at $2,000/mo, fractional CFO at $4,000/mo, and onboarding runs $3,000-$9,000 depending on how much cleanup the books need. Several firms in the table do not publish pricing at all, which is worth factoring into your comparison.
Why don't you list competitors' prices here?
Because a competitor's price is a number we cannot maintain. We published specific figures for a while and they went stale — in one case we were understating a competitor's price by $60 a month, and had not noticed that the company had been through an insolvency. Pointing you at their own pricing page is the only version that stays true.
Not sure which side of the line you are on?
The assessment takes four minutes and will tell you plainly if your practice is too small for this to be worth it.
