SMFM 2027: March 21-26, National Harbor

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine holds its 2027 Pregnancy Meeting from March 21 to March 26, 2027 at the Gaylord National in National Harbor, Maryland. It runs longer than most specialty meetings because postgraduate courses sit either side of the scientific programme, which matters when you are pricing time away. Sorso is not an exhibitor, sponsor, or speaker at this event. This is an independent prep guide for OB/GYN and MFM practice owners.

The CFO read

Ultrasound is where MFM economics are decided and where the analysis is usually missing. We regularly find practices running machines well below the utilisation the equipment was justified on, and paying for sonographer hours against a schedule that has gaps nobody has looked at. Pull utilisation per machine and per sonographer before National Harbor. It is the number that tells you whether the answer is more referrals, different scheduling, or one less machine.

Why this matters for your bottom line

Maternal-fetal medicine sits between referral practice and consultative work, so the revenue depends heavily on referral relationships and on how consults are coded. Neither is visible in a standard P&L.

Ultrasound is a large share of MFM revenue and it is a capital and staffing business as much as a clinical one. Utilisation per machine and per sonographer decides whether the line contributes or drags.

High-risk obstetrics carries the heaviest documentation burden in women's health, and denials concentrate where medical necessity has to be demonstrated rather than assumed.

Where MFM practices are employed by or contracted to hospital systems, the contract terms matter more than the fee schedule. Owners renewing one should know their own cost to deliver before the conversation starts.

What to look for

01

Coding and documentation sessions for high-risk obstetric care and consultative visits

02

Ultrasound utilisation, accreditation requirements, and staffing models for sonographers

03

Telehealth in maternal-fetal medicine and how it is reimbursed across states

04

Hospital contracting and coverage arrangements for MFM groups

05

Practice management content on referral relationships and consult turnaround

06

Workforce and compensation benchmarking for a small and competitive specialty

Financial prep checklist

Review these before you go.

Calculate revenue and contribution per ultrasound, including sonographer time and equipment cost

Measure ultrasound utilisation per machine and per hour against your capacity

Separate consultative revenue from procedural revenue and margin each on its own

Audit denial reasons on high-risk obstetric codes and how many are documentation-driven

Work out your true cost to deliver contracted hospital coverage before renewing it

Track referral volume by source so you know which relationships actually carry the practice

What it costs to send someone

Registration is the line everyone budgets first. It is rarely the one that decides whether the trip was worth it.

Registration

SMFM has published the dates and the venue for 2027. Rates were not published at the time of writing, and postgraduate courses are typically priced on top of the main registration, so budget for both if you plan to attend them.

Coverage and lost production

This meeting spans most of a week, which is longer than the three-day norm and materially more clinical time. In a small MFM group there is often no one to hand the high-risk service to, so coverage is the constraint that decides who goes.

Who else travels

MFM groups are small, so sending two physicians can mean half the practice is away. That is the line to model, well before the airfare.

What comes back as a deduction

IRS Publication 463 allows the travel deduction for a convention where “your attendance benefits your trade or business,” on the ordinary rules for travel away from home. Meals are generally limited to 50% of the unreimbursed cost. Keep the agenda with the receipts, and confirm the treatment with whoever signs your return.

No rates are quoted here. The organizer had published none when we last checked this page against their site on 10 August 2026, and travel is yours to price for your own dates anyway. The point of the list is that the two lines owners leave out, coverage and headcount, are the ones that decide the real number.

Stan does not have a ticket booked for this one yet. If enough clinic owners want to sit down there, that is what decides it. Register interest and we will confirm either way well before the dates — no obligation, and we will not add you to a mailing list.
